For those of you who haven’t met him, Neil Bell is our Marion County Horticulture Agent (we share him with Polk County).
Now that spring is upon us (especially this week!), now is a good time to consider mulch application to flower beds and shrub borders in the garden. Much of the rainfall we will receive in the winter period has already fallen, so mulching now is a way of decreasing evaporation from the soil. Also, although you will have any perennial weeds and winter annuals to deal with first, it is still a bit too cool for many summer annuals, so applications now will cover those seeds up and diminish your summer weed problems. And, it’s an opportunity to get outside and get some exercise!
